What German workshops look for beyond your Abschlusszeugnis
When a metalworker or electrician sits across from an Ausbildungsmeister or Betriebsleiter, the Zeugnis is usually already on the table. The conversation turns quickly to what you actually owned on the last job: which Maschinenpark, which Prüfprotokolle, who signed off when something went wrong on Nachtschicht.
In our consultations we ask people to list three Verantwortungsbereiche they can defend with a story. Vague phrases like “team player on the production line” rarely survive that exercise. Specific ones do — “I coordinated Sperrungen for the press line with Instandhaltung” or “I trained two new colleagues on the Sicherheitseinweisung for the Schweißkabine.”
If you are preparing a career transition, write those three stories before you rewrite your Lebenslauf. Employers in the Handwerk and industrial trades hire the person who can narrate risk, materials, and handover — not the longest list of course titles.
