Foreign trade certificates and the first Anerkennung conversation

Stack of documents with a fountain pen

People arriving with plumbing, electrical, or machining credentials from outside Germany often translate every certificate first and ask which office second. That order wastes money. Recognition routes differ by Beruf and sometimes by Bundesland. A Heizungsbauer path is not identical to an Industriemechaniker path.

In Qualification Recognition Guidance sessions we start with a simple filter: Is your trade regulated Handwerk? Is it industrial? Did you complete a full programme or a partial one? The answers point toward Handwerkskammer, IHK-adjacent routes, or other Anerkennungsstellen.

Bring clear scans, not perfect translations, to the first advice conversation. Once the correct body is identified, you will know which pages truly need sworn translation. If a Defizitbescheid is likely, plan Ausgleichsmaßnahmen early — waiting until after the Bescheid arrives stretches an already long timeline.
